When my son Jonathan was just ten years old (he is 22 now), we were having a great deal of difficulty managing his behavior, especially his aggressive behavior.
He was being very defiant (not unlike typical kids), however, his anger towards me escalated to the point that he ran over to the kitchen drawer, pulled out a knife and came running towards me.
Have you ever had your child pull a knife on you?!?
Very scary and frightening situation for anyone to be in, especially as a parent and it’s your own child pulling the knife out on you.
It was like an alarm clock moment and I knew immediately that I was in danger, however, if I had backed down he would have learned that he could push me around.
So, stood in the face of danger, looked straight into his eyes and said: “What are you going to do? Cut up your mother?”
He stood there and trembled for a moment and then threw the knife on the floor and ran out of the door.
I proceed to lock him out and call my husband.
To this day, I tremble inside thinking back on this time. Of course, nothing like this has ever happened since and never will. He respects me now, but if I hadn’t taken a stand, I fear I would have lost his respect forever.
Have you ever had your child act in an aggressive way towards you or towards others?
Please share your story with me, and what you did to resolve the situation.
