The most common questions

The most common questions we are asked is "what causes autism" and "is there a cure"?
There is so much heated debate going on about the answers to these questions. Much of this was covered in a recent Larry King interview with Jenny McCarthy and David Kirby.

Recently, a group of the world's foremost authorities on autism met in Orlando Florida and presented their views of the causes and solutions. They covered new strategies and the latest in educational interventions and success strategies.

Everyone with an interest in the causes of autism and solutions should have been there. You would have learned in a plain and easy-to-understand way:

  • Bio-medical treatments
  • Resources needed for recovery, advocacy, and education
    to acheive a better quality of life
The third most common questions I am asked is, "What is meant by Bio-medical?"

"Bio-medical" means the treatments that utilize and employ all integrative health methods including diet, nutrition, supplements, holistic therapies, and many non-medical technologies that have repeatedly provided significant improvement without the side-effects ususlly associated with drugs and other standard medical approaches.

Keep reading, you still have an opportunity to learn from these incredible autism experts, an opportunity to see them up close and hear every word.

David Berger MD, Board Certified Pediatrician

Prevent Harm Now: How to Carry, Birth and Raise a Healthy Child in a Toxic World

Wholistic Pediatrics, under the direction of David S Berger, MD, is one of the few medical practices in the world that offers individualized wholistic treatment plans prepared by a Board Certified Pediatrician. Because we also provide primary and sick care to our patients, we are able to provide comprehensive medical services for the special needs child. We have developed protocols that are age and weight specific to safely utilize both natural and pharmacological agents in the healing of the patient. We prescribe specific brands and products that we have thoroughly researched for safety and efficacy. Each child is different and an individualized approach to testing and treatment plan needs to be followed.

Dr. Berger is a Board Certified Pediatrician who specializes in holistic pediatric primary care, nutritional and detoxification therapies for autism, ADHD and related disorders, and immune dysregulation.

He graduated from The Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1994 and did his Pediatric Residency at the University of South Florida. He started using holistic therapies at the Tampa General Hospital Pediatric Clinic during his residency. He has served as the team doctor for Tampa Catholic High School, the Medical Director for a summer camp run by the Tampa AIDS Network, and the Medical Liaison for the Palm Beach County Breast Feeding Task Force. He has been in private practice since 1997, and in 2005 he opened up Wholistic Pediatrics in Tampa, Florida.

Phillip DeMio, MD

Stop the Assault! The Three "D's" for the ASD: Issues of Diets, Digestion, and Detoxification/Chelation for the Autism Spectrum The vast majority of persons on the Autism Spectrum (ASD) who make significant gains from biomedical treatments will require care that addresses the triad of dietary intervention, digestive/gastrointestinal problems, and detoxification techniques (such as chelation). Thus an understanding of the three "D's" is paramount to the success of the biomedical approach for virtually all patients. This discussion will include the major aspects of these three areas, and how this leads to insights into the biomedical basis of symptoms and treatment of the ASD.

2 Disk Set!

Learning objectives:
  1. Dietary Intervention: Practical implementation of treatment programs will be given, including such diets as gluten-free/casein-free, specific carbohydrate, low oxalate, pigment restriction (eg,phenols and salicylates), and others. Particular situations in which one diet would be chosen over another will be highlighted.
  2. Digestive and gastrointestinal (GI): Topics will touch upon overgrowth of yeast and other dysbioses (abnormal GI germs), leaky gut, abdominal pain, chewing problems, swallowing difficulties, acid reflux, diarrhea, constipation, malabsorption of nutritional substances, and how these all connect to symptoms in our children and adults with spectrum disorders.
  3. Detoxification: An often misunderstood phenomenon, detoxification will be described. Our patients and loved ones on the spectrum often suffer from toxicity via a variety of substances that originate from such entities as vaccines to dental metals to environmental sources. Mercury, aluminum, and other known toxins cause many of the maladies experienced by our patients. Chelation techniques and other approaches will be presented, and goals will be outlined.

Dr. DeMio is board-certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He received his M.D. from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine with honors in Neurosurgery, Endocrinology/Metabolism, Advanced OB/GYN, and Advanced Internal Medicine. Dr. DeMio has been a faculty member at several teaching hospitals including Case Western University School of Medicine and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He is accredited by the Teaching System of U.S. Armed Forces Medical Core and his career includes an emphasis on toxicology. Dr. DeMio is currently the Medical Director for the Whole Health and Wellness Centers located in Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. His practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. As a father of a child with autism, Dr. DeMio explains his mission to help patients reach their maximum potential through biomedical care with the philosophy, "that our children and loved ones are first and foremost in all of our treatments."

Dr. DeMio's practice includes primary care and integrative medicine/toxicology for children and adults. The Centers are the largest participant in a research program regarding the use of multiple enzyme preparations. He has also emphasized other broad issues. "We must address the immune system in every child so that this major piece of the biological aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorders can be treated," said Dr. DeMio. Ongoing research also emphasizes early diagnosis including methods to identify at-risk children before symptoms develop, along with helping families prepare for subsequent pregnancies.

Dr. DeMio is Chief Medical Office for US Autism and Asperger Association. Currently a program host on Autism One Radio, he has previously hosted different health talk radio programs.

Dan Rossignol, MD

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Autism

How hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) works, recent autism findings, including cerebral hypoperfusion, neuroinflammation and GI inflammation, and oxidative stress and how HBOT can help with each of these conditions. Dr. Rossignol will wrap up with a discussion of HBOT safety, dosing and review data from case studies.

Learning Objectives:
  1. To review the role, possible mechanisms, and symptom correlations of relative cerebral hypoperfusion in autistic individuals and understand how HBOT may help overcome this finding.
  2. To review recent evidence demonstrating that autism is characterized by inflammation in the brain and gastrointestinal tract and understand how HBOT may help overcome this inflammatory process.
  3. To review the role of oxidative stress in autism and discuss how HBOT and antioxidants may help impact this finding.

Dan Rossignol, MD, is on staff at the International Child Development Resource Center (ICDRC), a former Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia Department of Family Medicine and a Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) physician. He received his Doctorate of Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia and completed his residency in family medicine at the University of Virginia. Treating Autism is a Team Approach and You are Part of that Team; Take an Active Role

I am speaking tonight from the perspective of a parent who has traveled down a road of marked success due to the use interventions for a child with autism and his effected sibling.

Advocacy - You Can Make a Difference! Shortly before relocating to the Middle East in the early 1990's our youngest daughter Deanna was diagnosed with asthma, while our oldest daughter Rachel was beginning to show signs of what we would learn later was autism Pervasive Developmental Disorder/Not Otherwise Specified (PDD/NOS). If there was one thing I want you to take away from this information presented, it is that change often starts with the individual and then leads to a group of likeminded individuals who then communicate their message and affect change. It starts with the individual. Never give up! No one knows what is truly possible in terms of improvement of outcomes or recovery - it is evolving and no individual is too old to pursue recovery!;

Improvement of outcomes or recovery can be a long process and seldom happens overnight. It is highly individualized. Be patient with the process and yourself; Let yourself off the hook for not knowing what you know today. Do not measure your child's progress against another's and beat yourself up!;

Research, legislation, education and services will not move forward without community support. We are three million strong and growing! We have taken autism from being caused by poor mothering to a condition that is highly treatable with significant improvement and possible recovery! Your actions, or inaction, make a difference!

Theresa Wrangham is the mother of a 17 year old affected daughter and brings to the fore an experienced parent's perspective on raising a healthy child affected by ASD and the benefits of advocacy outside family needs. Ms. Wrangham is the Past President and Co-Founder of Autism Society of Boulder County, which was the first ASA chapter to bring a biomedical and behavioral conference to Colorado's autism community.

Ms. Wrangham also spearheaded Colorado's legislative efforts to ban mercury containing vaccines in favor of vaccines meeting federal safety guidelines. She currently sits on USAAA's Advisory Panel and was recently appointed USAAA Director of Educational Development and Conference Liaison, is a Board Member and the Vice-Chair of Governmental Affairs for SafeMinds and is a retired AMTA massage therapist. Ms. Wrangham has been featured in several Colorado publications, radio interviews and local news interviews.
