Since its establishment in 1967, the Autism Research Institute has had as a major priority the tracking of promising treatments for autism. We do not subscribe to conventional medicine's strategy of simply trying 'the drug of the month.' Autism is not caused by a deficiency of Ritalin or Risperidal. Intensive study of the scientific literature, and analysis of case reports from thousands of parents of autistic children convinced us that there is much that can be done NOW to help many autistic children.
To accelerate the development and dissemination of information that will be helpful to many families of autistic children, the Autism Research Institute convened the first Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) conference in Dallas in January, 1995. Thirty carefully selected physicians and scientists, from the U.S. and Europe, with special expertise in autism research and treatment, attended. Psychiatry, neurology, immunology, allergy, biochemistry, genetics and gastroenterology were among the fields represented. There was a cordial meeting of the minds and a very rapid consensus among the participants.
The participants agreed that one of the major priorities of the Defeat Autism Now! project should be the publication of a document representing the best ideas and practices of those in attendance, so that they could share their expertise with physicians everywhere who are interested in bringing about real and substantive improvement in the diagnosis and treatment of autism, as quickly as possible. The document, now titled Autism: Effective Biomedical Treatments, has gone through several revisions, most recently in 2005. It represents a consensus statement of the state-of-the art alternative medical approach to the treatment of autism. It is available as publication B-134 on the ARI publication list.
Follow-up Defeat Autism Now! conferences are held each Spring and Fall to further advance the treatment of autism. The conferences have produced a base of physicians who wish to employ rational, scientifically sound approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of autism, and who regard psychoactive drugs as their last choice, not their first.
Following is a list of physicians and other practitioners who have attended one or more Defeat Autism Now! conferences, as well as a number of other health practitioners whom we believe to be sympathetic to the Defeat Autism Now! approach. If there is no physician or practitioner who use the Defeat Autism Now! approach near you, write for our lists of physicians who practice alternative medicine in your state and any two other states. There is no charge for lists for 3 states. If you want the entire list, there is a $10.00 charge.
Regrettably, some parents have reported to us that certain listed practitioners they contacted were in fact not truly sympathetic to the Defeat Autism Now! approach, despite their having requested to be on our referral list. In response to this problem, in July 2002 ARI requested all those on the practitioners list to sign a statement asserting that they subscribe to the Defeat Autism Now! philosophy, and conduct their practice in accordance with the Defeat Autism Now! philosophy. They were also asked to indicate which Defeat Autism Now!-related interventions they offer. Their responses are published on our referral list below. To read their responses, simply click on the link associated with the practitioner's name. If there is not a link on the practitioner's name, he/she has not responded to our request. We hope adding this information will help parents select the most appropriate practitioner for their child. While ARI cannot endorse specific practitioners, we emphatically do endorse the Defeat Autism Now! approach.
Note that some health care practitioners listed below are not physicians, and therefore are not able to provide some of the Defeat Autism Now! diagnostic and treatment options. However, many of these practitioners can and do provide helpful treatments and advice, and may be able to suggest helpful local physicians who are not yet on the list.
