An Autism Day
By: Leigh Stutesman

Hold me mom.
She says with heavy eyes.
Nothing seems to be going right today.
Her eyes look sad.
She's distant today.
Off in her own little world.
Separated from our reality.
In her hands she holds
Four plastic little rings.
They are all that matter today
Rings and chocolate milk.
She hasn't wanted the TV
Or any of her favorite shows.
Instead she sits and stares
And holds her little rings.
She twirls my hair in her fingers
As gently we begin to rock.
The connection is there.
I feel it deep down.
But the words are not.
A few brief words are all she's said.
Mostly just to cry.
She's pointing for drinks,
Lining her books,
Making patters along the floor.
Today is what I call an Autism day.
Where the disorder holds on tight.
She's trapped in it's cage today
And not trying to come out.
Today I'll shed more tears
And wipe away the pain.
Today is an Autism day.
A day full of fears.
