I came to work for the Alabama Dept. of Rehabilitation
Services with the help of my rehabilitation counselor
(Linda Wilson). I work for the agency as a telephone
operator. I love working here because I get to
work with people with disabilities like myself.
It is the most rewarding job I've ever had. A.D.R.S.
has been more than a place to work for. It has
been place of opportunities and inspiration. I
have had visions problems most of my life but
it hasn't stopped me from accomplishing anything
in life. I have been involved with the American
Council for the Blind. I've been able to learn
more about the issues of being blind and visually
impaired through support group meetings and annual
conventions. Working at A.D.R.S. has allowed me
to get involved with A.C.B. and other organizations.
Another opportunity I got into was talking about
my experiences with autism. Two years ago I attended
the A.D.R.S. staff fall conference. Before the
conference, I learned there was going to be a
session on autism. After learning about this I
asked about speaking at this function because
I felt that my story would be very beneficial
for staff members who might be working with someone
who is autistic. It was there I gave my first
speech ever and after that I spoke for several
more times at other events. Thanks to the agency
I have found the courage to talk about this disability
again and provide awareness to others. I'm involved
with the Autism Society of Alabama. By taking
part in these opportunities has been inspirational
and has allowed me to represent A.D.R.S. and the
people we serve. I'm very grateful to the staff
for their support and courage through all of this.
I only wish to see this continue on because I
can't imagine life without the Alabama Dept. of
Rehabilitation Services.
