| Jerry Newport Asperger's Socialization Expert |
 Jerry Newport is a "late-bloomer," autism-wise. He was born August 19th, 1948, exactly two years after President Clinton. Unlike Clinton, however, Jerry did inhale... a mild mix of Asperger's symptoms and enough savant skills to avoid formal diagnosis until 1995. Raised in New York by two teachers, Jerry obtained a B.A. in Math from University of Michigan. Jerry moved to Southern California after college and spent three decades in San Diego and Los Angeles.
Prior to seeing Rain Man in 1989, he was unaware of autism. Jerry's first wake up call came after he multiplied 4343 by 1234 faster than "Rain Man" responded on screen. Prior to this self-discovery, Jerry's major interests were politics, sports, music and nature.
Since 1991, Jerry has been active in the autism community. He served on the Board of Directors of the Autism Society of Los Angeles and its agency, PDH Inc. During that tenure, Jerry founded an AGUA (Adult Gathering, United and Autistic). He and Mary Meinel, who also is a savant with Asperger's Syndrome, met at an AGUA Halloween meeting and they later married.
Jerry's first book, Your Life is Not a Label: A Guide to Living Fully with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome (2001) is now in its second printing. He and Mary co-wrote Autism-Asperger's and Sexuality: Puberty and Beyond (2002). Jerry has been interviewed on many radio talk shows and was featured on National Public Radio's The Infinite Mind. He continues to be in great demand for his lively, humorous presentations.
Today, Jerry and Mary live in Tucson, Arizona. He works seasonally at H&R Block and also does freelance accounting. Mary is a mother of two independently living sons and is a proud grandmother.
