"The musical, "Day After Day" was an extraordinary experience. I have relatives who never knew what I went through raising my son, who has autism. I could never explain in the way where they would "get it", so to speak. After having them come to see the show, everything has changed. My own sister came up to me crying, saying she had no idea. I think everyone will now know what we go through raising these amazing children" George Bernard Father, Chicago, IL "Last night I saw the pop opera, "Day After Day". It took me through a personal journey through my own life. Steven Allen captured exactly what we as parents live through everyday. Specifically, I took to the family in the show that had the three siblings who felt ignored. I cried as I realized that maybe my own children feel that way, having an autistic sibling. I feel different now and know that I have to try to make them feel just as loved and important. This show changed my life. A very heartfelt thanks to Steven Allen" Robyn Mattews Mother, Boston, MA
"Day After Day" is a pop opera written and directed by Steven Allen about people affected by autism. It shows the everyday lives of the families of three children with autism, each with a very different case. Troy is a ten year old boy who is very high functioning. He can recite, word for word, shows and commercials he hears on television. Troy has a mother, father, and an older sister. His mother works with him constantly trying to make him understand simple things, like what a cookie is. His father takes Troy as he is. He doesn’t really care if he progresses at all. Troy’s older sister also feels that her mom is putting too much time into working with Troy. She feels that all she’s going to do is frustrate herself. Amy is a six year old girl who is non-verbal. However, even though she cannot talk, she can play the piano beautifully. Amy is an only child. There is constant friction between her young parents. Her mother thinks that her piano playing is wonderful, while her father is only concerned with her learning to talk. He sees the piano as a disadvantage. Jack is a thirteen year old boy with a big family. He has an older brother, an older sister, and a younger sister, who are referred to affectionately as "The Other Three Kids." They are constantly feeling the need to compete with Jack for their mother’s attention. Their father left shortly after the youngest sister was born. He realized he couldn’t deal with four children, especially one with autism. Jack doesn’t progress much. His mother still works with him every now and then trying to get him to understand simple things, like Wednesday is his day to take out the garbage. The
pop opera is not only about the children with autism. It’s about
their parents, siblings, Receiving
the news of autism can be a heart-wrenching experience. Parents need
accurate, factual information about the difficulties experienced by
children with autism spectrum disorders. Equally important is maintaining
a sense of hope in the face of this diagnosis. “Living In the
Spectrum” helps parents balance a realistic understanding of their
child’s limitations with the optimism necessary to help their
children reach maximum potential. Ruth M. Anan, Ph.D., B.C.B.A William Beaumont Hospital, Berkley, Michigan This audio CD provides a clear description of Asperger syndrome and the differences between this disorder and Autism. The interviews with those on the spectrum, their family members and professionals also provide a great deal of insight into this disorder. Great Job!
Stephen Edelson, Ph.D This
is an absolutely wonderful production! It’s high time that we
portray individuals with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders) as the brilliant,
creative people that they are! This is a real gem of a CD and one of
the best introductions to Autism ever!

Wow! If you have a child with autism or Asperger syndrome, put this CD into the hands of their teacher. In the space of 1 hour it will have them perceiving your child in a whole new light. It offers a powerful combination of experts and first person stories that is both touching and eye opening without feeling overwhelming. An excellent introduction to the Autistic Spectrum. Lisa Simmons – Advocate While listening to this I found myself going through a myriad of emotions as each person that spoke moved me immensely. I felt like crying, laughing, and nodding my head in agreement with the parents, professionals that spoke. As a parent of a child with AS, who is my inspiration for all I do, I highly recommend every parent, teacher, professional to get a copy of this educational and inspirational CD on ASD. Living In the Spectrum: “Autism & Asperger’s” is a valuable and necessary tool to better understand ASD!

This CD is such a breath of fresh air because it adds a new dimension to the total picture where “doom and gloom” is often the first emotion parents feel when their child has received a diagnosis of autism. The poetry, the music, and the insights by researchers, parents, and persons with autism all offer accurate information, but more importantly they present the gifts and strengths that may also be present along the spectrum. This CD will be instrumental in helping young parents chart a course toward greater social interaction for their children and greater peace and a sense of fulfillment for themselves.
Laurence A. Becker, Ph.D A wonderful “tribute” to those that are in the spectrum! This CD is a much needed source of information, as well as encouragement for those in the Autism spectrum and their family and friends. Informative, compassionate and very accurate thanks to the testimonials from medical and legal professionals and from individuals within the autistic spectrum. It gives reassurance to those that are involved with these individuals that all is not lost nor are they alone in their concern and confusion. You even touch on the legal aspects relative to education which gives parents “food for thought” when working with the schools. Jackie Edgerton – Teacher The CD is very insightful into the life of Autism and Asperger’s. It would be a great introduction to people who have little knowledge and a lot of apprehension about interacting with Autism spectrum individuals. Linda
Tyner Living In the Spectrum is an innovative, educational CD on Autism and Asperger’s that offers optimism and hope. Many people have heard of autism, but few are familiar with its close relative: Asperger Syndrome. Actually, most people know very little about both conditions or have misconceptions about persons with Autism and Asperger’s. Mindscape Productions developed an audio CD to educate people about autism and Asperger’s in an interesting, engaging and inspirational way. The CD, entitled “Living In The Spectrum: Autism & Asperger’s” is filled with valuable nuggets of insight from researchers, parents and actual individuals who are affected by the disorders. It takes a unique, optimistic approach to covering both conditions, featuring captivating music, poetry and interviews. “The CD offers a practical, user-friendly way to learn about autism and Asperger’s,” says Lecia Macryn, who co-created the CD with Jeff LaDuke of Mindscape Productions. “You can pop it in a CD player and listen to it at your convenience, while you’re doing other things like driving or working on the computer.” Autism is a spectrum disorder whose symptoms and characteristics can present themselves in a wide variety of combinations, from mild to severe. Symptoms include: disturbances in the rate of appearance of social and language skills; abnormal responses to sensations; impairment of speech and language; and abnormal ways of relating to people, objects and events. Mildly affected individuals may show only slight delays in language and greater challenges with social interactions. The severe form of the syndrome may include extreme self-injurious, repetitive, highly unusual and aggressive behavior. Autism typically appears during the first three years of life. Recent research establishes the prevalence of Autism as 1 in 250 and is four times more common in boys than girls. It has been found throughout the world in families of all racial, ethnic and social backgrounds. Children don’t “outgrow” autism, but symptoms may lessen as they develop and receive treatment. Asperger’s is a neurobiological disorder named for a Viennese physician, Hans Asperger, who published a paper in 1944 describing the autistic-like condition. Individuals with Asperger’s typically don’t have the severity of communication problems as those with autism, however, they show marked deficiencies in social skills, have difficulties with transitions or changes and prefer sameness. They typically have obsessive routines and may be preoccupied with a particular subject of interest. Often overly sensitive to sounds, tastes, smells, and sights, people with Asperger’s may prefer soft clothing, certain foods, and be bothered by sounds or lights that no one else seems to notice.. “Living In The Spectrum” is an ideal primer for parents, relatives, teachers, employers and anyone wanting to learn about autism and Asperger's. Not the typical dry lecture, the 55-minute CD delivers a captivating and easy introduction to the subject matter. “It offers hope and encouragement,” Macryn says. “It puts a whole new light and perspective on autism and Asperger's.” Regualar Retail Price: 16.95
