Karen Leigh SimmonsQuestion - my son just turned 6 and is in kindergarden, his teacher suspects high functionig autism.where do i start to get him tested.i see some signs but, i don't know if he 's shy and is a only child.i am really confused so i guess we need help. where do we start?can you please email me with any advise? i will take all i can get
thanks
Connie

Answer - I know how confusing and scarry it can be at first to learn there may be a problem as a mom of an autistic son. Though the potential diagnosis is alarming, I can't stress how important it is to take that first step. Early intervention is the key to the greatest success. Signs don't seem that big of a deal when children are younger but change as the child ages. I don't know where you are physically located but try your local Autism Society to ask for the best place to start. If there isn't one, find the closest big town and find one there. They are tremendous support. Feel free to email me at karen@autismtoday.com for more resource info as well as where to go get the proper education in this area. Keep an open mind and learn....learn....learn. Good luck and hope this helps. My heart is with you.

Subject: autism
Question - What are some of the early signs of autism? What are some of the disabilities of autistic people?

Answer - Some of the early signs of autism are spinning objects, things, themselves, lining objects up, lack of eye contact, not wanting to be held/touched, not wanting to interact with others. Depends on degree of autism, i.e. severe, non verbal, repetitive behavior or mild and/or HFA (high functioning autism, Aspergers Syndrome. Areas affected regardless are behavior, communication (even in verbal) social skills.

Subject: autism
Question - I am pregnant with our first son to be born in about 8 weeks. My husband has a first cousin with autism and my question is: what are the chances that this could be passed to our son?
Jody

Answer - They are slim but not out of the question. I wouldn't worry too much at this point. It usually is more directly connected, i.e. mother, father. They are constantly studying the area of genetics and you might want to check out autism.org for more info or our site AutismToday.com Hope delivery goes well for you. Good luck

Subject: Chelation therapy
Question - Hi! My son is 3 and was dianosed with mild pddnos/hyperlexia. I've been doing research on chelation therapy and I'm very interested in getting my son tested for mercury poisoning. My question is 3 parts: 1. Will my pediatrician ok the test? 2. How long until the results? 3. Do hmo plans (I know each one is different) usually cover these tests?
Thank you for your input.
Janine

Answer - I am not that familiar with chelation therapy but would be interested in hearing how the testing goes. Whether your pediatrician ok's the test is entirely up to him/her. Your covereage will also depend on where you live and what type of supports are offered.

Subject: Potty Training
Question - As a parent of a 4 1/2 year old son who was recently diagnosed with Autism
(previously he was diagnosed with SDD) both my husband & I are running
into a lot of problems with his lack of communication in particular him
informing us of when he has to use the bathroom (all we want him to say is
"go potty"). I was on vacation last week visiting my parents & my mom
said that he's got "us trained" since we run him into the bathroom every
time we think he has to go (it really gets tiresome...) this is what they
do at his school also. Any words of advise on how we can solve this?
By-the-way when I was on vacation last week I did use pull ups & my
husband says he thinks that he's regressed.

Answer - Hi Julie,

Potty training is a very difficult thing for some children with autism.
There is an excellent resource "Toilet Training" by Maria Wheeler. We are expanding our site to include top autism experts so you can go to autismtoday.com and opt in to receive the free newsletter.

Subject: my child's treatment for autism
Question - hi....i'm writing from khi, pakistan. Here we've no formal institute or people
dealing with autism. My son is 3 years 10 months and his early evaluation
diagnosed him as a high functioning autistic.
His main symptoms are his poor eye contact, limited and delayed speech, lack
of initiation socially and above all hyperactivity.although we at home are
used to him but at school he's having a lot of problem 'cos he's not
sitting ,showing tantrums ,not socializing......now his paeditrician and a
neurologist suggested we should put him on ritalyin...........now i'm not
sure about it as he's still less than 5 years and weighs about 18 kg.I'm
more interested in using the vitamin/mineral therapy in which supplements
of vB6 and magnesium are used.Kindly advice me what to do and how to make
him more controllable.please also send me some details about ritalyn's
usage and it's side-effects and the vitamin/mineral therapy.
i'll be very very obliged 'cos i'm very upset.

Answer - Hello Saira, As a parent, I can only say that I have experience with dexedrine. I
would stay away from ritalyn as I haven't heard great things about it. I
have heard wonderful things about vitamin therapy but of course it depends
on the child. We are currently lining up the top experts in the world to help people
