On February 12, 2026, researchers at La Trobe University announced the launch of a world-first, neuro-affirming suicide prevention toolkit created specifically to support autistic adults.
Let that sink in for a moment.
For years, we’ve known that autistic adults face a significantly higher risk of suicidal thoughts and suicide – yet traditional mental health assessments were never truly designed with autistic neurology, communication styles, or lived experience in mind. Too often, warning signs are missed. Distress is misunderstood. And people fall through the cracks.
This new toolkit is designed to change that.
It helps healthcare professionals:
- Recognize suicide risk through an autistic lens
- Adapt screening questions appropriately
- Develop safety plans that are meaningful and practical
- Understand how burnout, masking, and sensory overload can impact mental health
And what I especially appreciate? It was co-designed with autistic adults and people with lived experience. That matters. Deeply.
The training takes about two hours, and screenings can take as little as ten minutes – small investments of time that could make an extraordinary difference.
This is what progress looks like: listening to the community, respecting neurodiversity, and building systems that actually fit the people they’re meant to serve.
If you work in healthcare, education, advocacy, or policy, I encourage you to explore this initiative further. And even if you don’t – it’s a powerful reminder that change is possible when we center lived experience.
